TECHNOLOGY
Mesh, Wi-Fi and HiperLAN Networks: New Technologies and Standards New standards and products come out constantly: solutions based on 802.11n (MIMO), HiperLAN, multi-hop communications networks (Wireless Mesh) and Mobile WiMax. The focus will be on the new developments in technologies and network infrastructures, the changes in network and access technologies, the need for convergence and interoperability, and cost analysis and security.
REGULATION & THE MARKET
MVNO: Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), who are now full-fledged mobile operators (with their own SIM cards, prepaid and/or subscription services, and customer management and support) but lack a transmission network of their own, have spread across Europe, where they boast over 40 million customers, and all over the world. In Italy, too, they started to develop in the second half of 2007 and this process will continue throughout 2008, in spite of the fact that these new operators are not protected by the current legislation and the agreements between traditional carriers and future virtual operators are mere business contracts between the parties, with all the consequences implied, including first and foremost the fact that they have a limited negotiating edge in connection to retail fees. Will virtual operators succeed in creating innovative products based on exclusive or added-value services, which will offer them the opportunity to survive in time? In addition to having a physical network for connections and to providing recharge and assistance services, it is vital for operators to offer basic services both for sale and use.
WiMax: the Outlook for the Future. In spite of the fact that mobile WiMax is set to become a mass phenomenon on the international markets by 2013, in Italy the future of this technology remains an open question. The adoption of WiMax, which many hail as the solution to the problem of the digital divide, bringing connection also to rural areas, is currently opposed by phone carriers, as this technology is a competitor of 3G networks, even though some of them are among the possible purchasers of WiMax frequencies. After the sale of the licenses, what future will this technology have?
